Nero had become emperor in 54 A.D., and his curiosity about theater and high end led him to appoint a courtier called Petronius (praenomen most likely Titus or perhaps Gaius) simply because his Arbiter elegantiae or judge of style. Described as a guy who “produced luxury an excellent artwork” and “who spent his times sleeping and his evenings working and savoring himself” by Tacitus, Petronius dictated the style and art on the Imperial courtroom. There he constructed his masterwork, the satirical “The Satyricon”, most likely in 61 A.D. Nero was capricious, nevertheless, and his favour was uncertain; the jealousy of the rival resulted in Petronius’ downfall. He fled to Cumae before Nero’s cronies swept up with him.
