Mini Biography

Vocalist/songwriter Brook Benton was created Benjamin Franklin Peay on Sept 19, 1931, in Camden, SC. He became a gospel vocalist at a age group and was an associate from the Camden Jubilee Performers. Benton relocated to NEW YORK at age group 17 in 1948 to try his fortune like a songwriter. When he 1st arrived in NY he sang with such gospel organizations as Expenses Langford’s Spiritual Performers, The Langfordaires, The Golden Gate Quartet, as well as the Jerusalem Celebrities. He eventually returned to SC, drove a pickup truck for some time and became a member of the R&B performing group The Sandmen ahead of returning to NY again searching for a large break. This time around Benton found an effective profession co-producing albums and composing tracks for such performers as Nat ‘Ruler’ Cole, Clyde McPhatter (he penned the strike tune “A Lover’s Issue” for McPhatter), and Roy Hamilton. Benton enjoyed his first small strike with “A Mil Mls from Nowhere.” Then turned to Mercury Information and attained his greatest industrial success recording a reliable string of strike songs with this label (he often collaborated with manufacturer/songwriter Clyde Otis while at Mercury). In 1959 Brook have scored two major discovery successes: “It’s ONLY A Matter of your time” peaked at #3 in the Billboard graphs and “Endlessly” proceeded to go completely to #12 in the graphs. Benton suffered this earning streak with such similarly excellent music as “MANY THANKS Pretty Baby,” “A LOT OF Methods,” “Resort Pleasure,” “The Boll Weevil Tune,” and “Kiddio.” “Baby (YOU HAVE WHAT MUST BE DONE)” and “A Rockin’ GREAT WAY (To FOOL AROUND and Fall in Appreciate),” his two wonderful duets with Dinah Washington, had been both Top 10 strikes in 1960. Brook damaged the very best 10 one final time in 1970 having a superbly shifting rendition of Tony Joe White’s beautiful ballad “Rainy Night time in Georgia.” He continued to be a favorite concert performer through the entire 1980s. Benton died in the tragically early age of 56 from spine meningitis in NEW YORK on Apr 9, 1988. He was survived by his wife Mary and four kids.
