Thelma McQueen attended open public college in Augusta, Georgia and graduated from senior high school in Long Isle, NY. She researched dance with Katherine Dunham, Geoffrey Holder, and Janet Collins. She danced using the Venezuela Jones Negro Youngsters Group. The “Butterfly” stage name, which will describe her continuously moving arms, in fact derives from dance the “Butterfly Ballet” within a 1935 creation of “A Midsummer Night’s Fantasy”.
