An ardent supporter from the KPD, the German communist party, Neher remaining Germany soon after the Nazi took over and emigrated to Prague, then to Moscow where she appeared around the stage like a cabaret artiste. In the springtime of 1936, Anatol Becker, Neher’s spouse -also an ardent communist, was caught and imprisoned on costs of “Terrorist Actions”. He was accused of preparing an assassination attempt on the individual of Soviet innovator, Josef Stalin. Pursuing his incarceration, Carola Neher relentlessly sought out him, heading from jail to jail trying to track his whereabouts. This is an extremely perilous activity considering that she was herself under monitoring by the trick Law enforcement. In her key file, recently within the KGB archives, she had been top quality as an “adventuress with anti-soviet sympathies”, which at that time equated to a loss of life sentence from the Moskow program. She was finally caught and delivered to jail a couple of months later on. She endured remarkably severe treatment there and attempted to commit suicide by slashing her wrists. After weeks of interrogation and torture, she was condemned to a decade hard labour inside a gulag as “Trotkyst spy and conspirator”, whilst Becker was shot before a firing squad. Many of her long-time close friends, amongst them Bertold Brecht attempted to greatly help her but to no avail. Neher was delivered to Oryol, an internment camp for politics dissidents where additional prominent Trotkysts like Christian Rakovsky, Maria Spiridonova and Olga Kameneva had been also imprisoned. Hardly any details can be found about Carola Neher later on. By March 1941, we realize that she was still alive: A notice she delivered to the orphanage, where her 7-12 months old child Georg have been delivered, survived. In the notice she inquires about his health insurance and whether he still kept in mind her. We also understand that she had not been among the 160 prominent politics prisoners shot in Oryol through the Stalin purges of Sept 1941. When the camp was occupied from the improving German military in Oct 1941, all German residents interned in Soviet gulags had been handed over towards the Gestapo. Like a communist, Neher was after that charged with Large Treason and evacuated East. The convoy found its way to the city of Ilezk near Orienburg (present-day Kazakhstan) in June 1942, where she was interned in the neighborhood jail. Pursuing an outbreak of typhus (the jail experienced no sanitary installations of any type), the currently weak 41-12 months aged Carola Neher (prisoner quantity 59783) passed away there on 26th July 1942. Her body was buried within an unmarked mass grave. Her child George, became a music instructor and only heard bout his parents’ identification in 1975.
