His maternal grandfather was John Fitzgerald, a prominent banker and railroad constructor in Nebraska. His paternal grandfather was T. J. Doyle, also a lawyer. He was among three kids, including sibling John, a lawyer, and sister Mary, an celebrity. He was raised in Lincoln and went to Cathedral grade college. He then visited Campion, a Jesuit prep college in Wisconsin. He produced his performing debut at age group six and performed children’s assignments in regional productions.
