Songwriter (“Primrose Street”, “Pastel”), composer, conductor, arranger, bassist and tubist who also, after his university education, performed while bassist inside the sets of Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Lester Small, later on forming his own trio. Beginning in the first 1950s, ahead of which he helped produce the amalgamation of L.A.’s hitherto segregated musician’s union, Callender was a very much in demand studio room musician, both on bass and on tuba. He made an appearance on many tv applications and in jazz celebrations, and produced many records. Becoming a member of ASCAP in 1957, his main musical collaborator was Wayne Shanklin.
