American actor who entered pictures when sick health required him to lessen his energetic stage career. He grew up in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where his dad was a division chairman at Williams University. His mom was the well-known traditional composer Mary Turner Salter. He spent a long time in vaudeville and share, and produced his Broadway debut in 1912. Throughout a 1926 tour where he played among the leading assignments in “What Cost Glory?” Salter was stricken with influenza and compelled to keep the present.
