A Cambridge, Massachusetts local, Russell was focusing on an military film in 1944 when an explosive he was keeping detonated accidentally, injuring his hands thus severely that that they had to become amputated. Russell was installed with artificial hands and enrolled at Boston University’s University of Business Administration (that he graduated in 1949). At exactly the same time, he continued to create an military film about the treatment of veterans. Samuel Goldwyn noticed Russell in the film and asked him to try out in THE VERY BEST Many years of Our Lives (1946), which received Russell a Greatest Supporting Acting professional Oscar in 1946.
