Mini Biography

Helen Hanft was known in the 1960s and 1970s as “the Ethel Merman of Off-Off Broadway.” The best celebrity of underground episode, she was the favourite leading woman of playwright Tom Eyen (who later on published the Broadway smash “Dreamgirls”). Eyen produced a play on her behalf known as, “Why Hanna’s Skirt Won’t Stay Down” that was revived a lot more than some other play in the Caffe Cino and La Mama E.T.C., New York’s two leading Off-Off Broadway theaters. Her brassy, dynamic comedic design was an excellent influence–and continues to be therefore acknowledged–by the youthful Bette Midler, who was simply often observed in leading row at Greenwich Community playhouses applauding Ms. Hanft.
