Istvan Szabo may be the best-known and perhaps one of the most critically acclaimed Hungarian film directors of recent years. In the 1960s and ’70s he aimed auteur movies in Hungarian, which explore his very own generation’s encounters and latest Hungarian background (Apa (1966); Szerelmesfilm (1970); Tuzoltó utca 25. (1973)). For the general public beyond art home cinema, his personal film trilogy includes Mephisto (1981, champion of the Academy Prize for Best SPANISH Film and a Cannes Prize to discover the best Screenplay), Colonel Redl (1984, champion of the Jury Prize on the Cannes Celebration) and Hanussen (1988).
