The son of the minister, de Hartog ran away to sea twice in his boyhood. Afterwards, after attending holland Naval University, he returned to sea being a sailor. During this time period he composed detective stories and a popular book about tugboat crews entitled “Holland’s Glory”. Through the Nazi job he discovered sanctuary in a residence in Amsterdam. Following the battle he transferred to England, begun to compose in British, and proved several novels, a few of that have been filmed: The Spiral Street (1962) with Rock and roll Hudson, “The Inspector” with Stephen Boyd (released beneath the name Lisa (1962)), and “Stella” with William Holden and Sophia Loren (released as THE MAIN ELEMENT (1958)). In 1951 his play, “The Fourposter”, became a significant Broadway success starring Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. A film version implemented with Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer and Broadway musicalized it as “I REALLY DO! I REALLY DO!” with Robert Preston and Mary Martin. De Hartog was briefly wedded as a guy in Holland. In Britain, in 1946, he wedded Angela Priestley, girl of J.B. Priestley. In 1961 he wedded Marjorie Mein with whom he resided in Houston, Tx, during his old age. Two children through the first relationship, Sylvia and Arnold, still reside in holland. Two kids from the next relationship, Catherine and Nicholas, still reside in England. Along with his third wife de Hartog used two Korean women, Eva Kim and Julia Kim, who reside in America.
