A veteran stage and display actor, Swickard was the sibling of actor Charles Swickard. He inserted movies in 1912 and was playing helping jobs for Mack Sennett by 1914. He continued to be with Sennett until 1917 when he began numerous aristocratic jobs in movies. His profession in sound movies was relatively limited and he performed in low-budget and actions serial type movies. In 1939, his ex-wife, Broadway celebrity Margaret Campbell, was brutally murdered by their kid. Swickard passed away a year afterwards from organic causes, not really, by jumping in the Hollywood indication as many accounts state.
