Joseph Kane’s profession as a specialist cellist ended when he became a film editor in 1926. His directing profession began with co-directing serials for Mascot and Republic, and he shortly became Republic’s best western movie director. He handled a lot of John Wayne’s Republic westerns from the 1940s, and piloted many Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movies (he was once asked within an interview why he do a lot of westerns. He replied, “I love the outside. The horses. The cowboys. I love that.”). Unlike many Republic home directors, Kane was acknowledged as associate manufacturer on a lot of his movies. He remained at Republic before studio’s demise in 1959, and after freelancing for mainly independent production businesses, he considered directing Television series.
