Maximum Ehrlich (1892-1944) was probably one of the most celebrated stars and directors around the German humor and cabaret picture from the 1930s. But his amazing profession was brutally interrupted from the rise of Nazism and his producing deportation in 1942 to Westerbork focus camp in Holland. Amazingly, there behind the wall space and barbed cable, Max Ehrlich created a theatre troupe made up of fellow prisoners – most of them also popular Jewish display business personalities – and created top quality musical and humor revues. This creative activity offered the opportinity for everyone worried, audience and stars alike, to maintain a small way of measuring humanity, free of charge their thoughts – only if momentarily – from your tragedy of lifestyle and nourish the illusion of success. But, in the long run, humor didn’t prevail: like the vast majority of his co-workers from this theatre of despair, in 1944 Maximum Ehrlich was transferred to Auschwitz and gassed.
