He was thinking about directing movies at age 19 and he made several shorts. As he wasn’t accepted to the Country wide Film College, he made a decision to dedicate himself to performing, and produced his debut in the theater in 1988 before shifting to movie theater and television. Popularity was included with the parts he performed in such movies as Riff-Raff (1991) by Ken Loach, Braveheart (1995) by Mel Gibson and Trainspotting (1996) by Danny Boyle, but most importantly when he gained for greatest leading actor on the Cannes Film Celebration in 1998 for I AM Joe (1998), once more by Loach. The Magdalene Sisters (2002) may be the second feature-length film he provides directed. He also aimed a few shows from the BBC Television series, Cardiac Arrest (1994), which gained him a greatest director nomination in the Royal Television Culture.
