Bass-baritone Buchan began his operatic profession at age 9 in “Carmen” using the Carl Rosa Opera Firm, later on joining the D’Oyly Carte chorus in Sept 1972. He instantly understudied John Ayldon in a few of his primary assignments, making occasional performances in the eponymous function in “The Mikado”, and Sergeant Meryll in “The Yeomen from the Safeguard”. He later on added Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre in “The Sorcerer”, Dick Deadeye in “H.M.S. Pinafore”, the Pirate Ruler in “The Pirates of Penzance”, Earl of Mountararat in “Iolanthe”, Colonel Calverley in “Endurance”, and Arac in “Princess Ida” to his roll-call from the bass tasks he understudied. He also understudied small role of Aged Adam in “Ruddigore”, and the main patter part of Major-General Stanley in “The Pirates of Penzance”. Buchan also performed lots of the smaller sized bass-baritone tasks as a normal principal performer. More than his a decade using the D’Oyly Carte, these included Calynx in “Utopia Small” (also documented for Decca), Bob Beckett, and later on Expenses Bobstay, in “H.M.S. Pinafore”, Giorgio in “The Gondoliers” (also documented for Decca), Samuel in “The Pirates of Penzance”, and Aged Adam in “Ruddigore”. Since 1982, Michael Buchan offers performed regularly using the London Savoyards and Magic of Gilbert And Sullivan Concert organizations, aswell as in a few from the “Collectively Once again” concerts, and with the Gilbert And Sullivan Opera Business (in it’s fledgling years) playing in both UK and USA as Aged Adam in “Ruddigore” and Sir Marmaduke in “The Sorcerer”. His relationship to D’Oyly Carte Primary contralto Patricia Leonard predates their D’Oyly Carte professions.
