Sarah Vaughan was created March 27, 1924 in Newark, NJ, and died Apr 3, 1990, in LA of lung malignancy. Her parents had been Asbury, a carpenter, and Ada, a laundress. She began monitoring music when she was seven, acquiring eight many years of piano lessons and 2 yrs of body organ. As a kid she sang in the choir in the Mt. Zion Baptist Chapel in Newark and performed piano and body organ in senior high school productions at Arts SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. She joined an amateur competition in the Apollo Theatre in New York’s Harlem region, performing “Body and Spirit”, and received the $10 reward and a week’s engagement in the Apollo. From 1944 to 1945, she sang with Billy Eckstine and in 1947 she wedded her supervisor, trumpeter George Treadwell. Her later on husbands included pro soccer participant Clyde Atkins and trumpeter Waymon Reed. She received many honours, including an Emmy in 1981 for any tribute to George Gershwin and a Grammy in 1983.
