Mini Biography

Spike was created an ‘Military Brat’, the child of the Irish Captain in the Uk Raj in India. Educated in some Roman Catholic colleges in India with Lewisham Polytechnic in Britain, he spent his formative years playing the fool and playing the trumpet in regional jazz bands. He joined the Uk Military himself (under protest if you were to think his auto-biogs) like a conscript in the outbreak of WWII. He offered in the Royal Artillery as Gunner Milligan through the North African and Italian promotions. He got a little too near an exploding shell and was hospitalised with shell-shock. On his get away from army existence he began his “actual” are an writer and humourist. Most well-known for ‘The Goon Display’ with Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe (and originally Michael Bentine), these radio displays are commonly thought to be re-writing the guidelines of comedy (actually just before Monty Python). Nevertheless beneath the pressure of composing all of the scripts he experienced a break down and became a medical manic-depressive. He was fondly thought to be the final of the fantastic Uk eccentrics and wrote an abundance of comic poetry mainly for kids, a few books and his multi-volume auto-biography. Spike was also an enthusiastic (fanatical?) environmental campaigner.
