Given birth to in Spain, Xavier Cugat’s family members moved to Havana, Cuba, when he was 3. Always musically willing, he loaded up and relocated to LA, where he worked well like a cartoonist for the LA Times newspaper throughout the day and labored to construct a band during the night. Over time of playing smaller sized night clubs in the L.A. region, Cugat finally got his break when he and his music group secured employment at the exclusive Coconut Grove nightclub in 1928. His design of music captured on, and Cugat was instrumental in getting Latin music towards the interest of the united states open public. In the ’30s and ’40s he was nicknamed “The Rumba Ruler” due to his popularization of this Latin dance. In Cugat’s film performances he usually performed himself, also if the type acquired a name apart from Xavier Cugat, and he and his music group appeared in a number of unforgettable MGM musicals in the ’40s. After struggling a heart stroke in 1971, Xavier Cugat retired.
