William ‘Billy’ Franey was a respected comic character professional of dishevelled appearance and fuzzy moustache, usually within a suit several sizes too large. His screen profession started around 1913, with prospects in the ‘Joker’ humor series released by Common. He was co-starred with Louise Fazenda (until her departure for Keystone in 1915) and, consequently, Gale Henry. In 1920, Franey became a member of an independent organization, Reelcraft, where he produced some one-reel pants bearing his name. Handful of them possess survived. People with, notably The Plumber (1921) as well as the Shower Dub (1921), are brilliantly inventive types of knockabout slapstick humor.
