Bruce began performing in 15 on CKCO and CFRA radio in his hometown of Ottawa and was a dynamic person in the Ottawa Small Theater. He was called Best Supporting Professional on the Dominion Dilemma Celebration in 1951. While functioning being a typewriter salesman, he auditioned for Tyrone Guthrie and was chosen being a founding business person in the Stratford Celebration. He received the initial Guthrie Prize (along with William Hutt), which he utilized to go to London, Britain to study theater in 1954-55. He increased through the rates in Stratford, getting business manager, theater and business supervisor, comptroller and eventually general supervisor. Bruce was an associate from the inaugural business from the Crest Theater in Toronto and toured Canada as well as the U.S. as an associate from the Canadian Players. He also performed on Broadway in Tamburlaine the fantastic and Robertson Davies’ Like and Libel. In 1979 he became a member of the Dallas Theater Center as general supervisor, and was appointed general supervisor from the St. Lawrence Center in Toronto in 1981.
