Mini Biography

After majoring in painting and illustration on the College or university of Michigan, Ed Emshwiller studied in Paris on the École des Beaux Arts and NYC’s Artwork Students Group. An abstract expressionist, he was also a significant research fiction illustrator through the 1950s and 1960s, earning Hugo Honours for his imaginative paperback and mag covers. Mixed up in New American Movie theater movement from the 1960s and early 1970s, he developed multimedia performance parts, cine-dance and experimental movies, while also filming documentaries and low-budget features. Over time as artist-in-residence at the tv screen Lab WNET/13 (NY), he shifted to California in 1984, offering as Dean of the institution of Film and Video on the California Institute from the Arts. Emshwiller’s functions are in the Museum of Contemporary Artwork, while his data files, correspondence, notebooks and stills are held on the American Film Institute Library.
