Evelyn Pearl Shuck (stage name Evelyn Daw) was most widely known for the film she made out of Adam Cagney entitled “Something to Sing About”. Cagney remarked a long time afterwards that besides “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, his preferred musical that he made an appearance in was “Something to Sing About”. She wedded Steward H. Smith, (1913 – 1975) retired from performing, and resided in NORTH PARK for quite some time. She was raised in Geddes, South Dakota where she began singing in public areas at age 10 and appeared in lots of church and senior high school shows before attending South Dakota Wesleyan and Fresno Condition University in California. After shifting to California, she sang little parts using the LA Philharmonic Opera and sang like a soloist at St. Wayne Episcopal Church as well as the LA Methodist Chapel. She analyzed with singing trainer Phoebe White colored before being found out by and learning to be a protege of Victor Schertzinger who after that aimed her in the 1937 Cagney film “Something to Sing About”. She experienced blue eye and a lyric soprano tone of voice. She retired from films after marrying Dr. Seward H. Smith.
