Mini Biography

London-born Evelyn Laye, daughter of actor parents, had been treading the planks at age two. Her dad handled the Palace Theater in Brighton which was where Evelyn 1st produced a name for herself. A practiced stage performer by age fifteen, she graduated towards the London Western End 3 years later on in a little component in “THE WONDER Spot”. Through the 1920’s, she was among England’s most widely used celebrities of musical revue and operetta, with strikes within the aviation musical “INCREASING” (1918-19), “Madame Pompadour” (1923), “Betty in Mayfair” (1925-26) and “Simply Molly” (1926-27), the final two in the Adelphi Theater. She made an appearance, both in London and on Broadway, in Noël Coward’s “Bitter Nice” in 1929, her music “I’ll Observe you Once again” getting her trademark personal piece. Her overall performance attracted the eye of maker Samuel Goldwyn, who quickly brought her to Hollywood. Tagged (by Goldwyn) as “the Champagne Blonde”, the beautiful Evelyn produced her American debut within the operetta, One Heavenly Night (1931), directed from the experienced George Fitzmaurice. The ridiculously contrived tale and ridiculous dialogue made that one of the most severe flops of 1931, not really helped from the solid wood overall performance of Laye’s co-star, John Boles. Although NY Instances critic Mordaunt Hall, in his January 10 review reserved only compliment for Laye’s performing and overall performance, Goldwyn cleaned his hands of the complete affair and Evelyn came back to Britain. She produced another attempt at Hollywood, four years later on, in THE NIGHT TIME Is Youthful (1935), another continental operetta, co-starring Ramon Novarro, and offering tunes by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein. Reviewer Andre Sennwald (January 14) caustically explained the picture to be theoretically well-made, but normally “without the distinguishing virtue”. There have been considerably better evaluations for Evelyn’s two British-Gaumont productions, Waltz Period (1933) and, unquestionably her best film, Evensong (1934), the storyplot from the rise and decrease of the Irish diva. There is a three-decade very long hiatus until Evelyn’s go back to the screen (though she had appeared mainly because herself with then-husband, and fellow actor, Frank Lawton, in it sitcom We (1956)). She was also rather incongruously solid within the horror film, Bloodstream Fiend (1967). 3 years later on, Evelyn gave a solid performance because the mom of Jean Simmons in State Hello to Last night (1971), a love occur swinging 60’s London. Generally, she continued to do something within the stage, which experienced been her favorite medium, carrying out in takes on like “Three Waltzes”, “THE INSTITUTION for Scandal”, “Wedding ceremony in Paris”, “The Marquise” and “The Amorous Prawn”. Among her last takes on was Noël Coward’s “Semi-Monde” (1987-88), in the Royalty Theater in London, with fellow solid users Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench. Keeping her recognition well into her nineties, Evelyn Laye produced her farewell tour of Britain in 1992. She passed away three years later on at age 95.
