George du Maurier was an anglo-French article writer and cartoonist most widely known for creating the type of Svengali in his 1894 book “Trilby” and to be the daddy of actor-manager Sir Gerald Du Maurier, the grandfather of article writer Dame Daphne Du Maurier, as well as the grandfather from the Llewelyn Davies young boys who inspired J.M. Barrie’s Peter Skillet (1924). Du Maurier was created in Paris on March 6, 1834 to Louis-Mathurin Du Maurier and Ellen Clarke. His maternal grandmother was Mary Anne Clarke, who was simply a notorious courtesan during England’s Regency period. After learning artwork in Paris, George shifted to Antwerp, Belgium and fulfilled Englishwoman Emma Wightwick, who was simply to be his wife, in Düsseldorf, Germany. He implemented Emma to London and wedded her in 1863. Of their five kids, Gerald was their second boy and last-born. He passed away on Oct 8, 1896 at age 62.
