Gopi Krishna was a renowned Kathak dancer and choreographer. He also analyzed Bharatnatyam. In 1952, at age seventeen, Gopi Krishna became among the youngest choreographers in Hindi film background when he was employed to choreograph dances for Madhubala in [Hyperlink=tt0130993]Saqi[/hyperlink]. In 1955, he made an appearance in his 1st film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje, a film which helped to revive interest in traditional dance. He also choreographed [hyperlink =tt0268342] Grahasti (1963)[/hyperlink], Dastaan (1972), Mehbooba (1976), Umrao Jaan (1981), and Naache Mayuri (1986). In 1975 the Indian authorities granted him India’s 4th highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. He arranged a global record for the longest constant Kathak dance at 9 hours and 20 moments.
