Given birth to in Glasgow, Scotland in 1956, Lawrence grew up in Scarborough, the eastern area of the town of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. As Lawrence stated, “My marks in high-school had been of the caliber that remaining me no choice but to pursue the profession of Rockstar.” He been trained in traditional piano in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and after graduating in 1976, he spent five years playing in his regional music group “Rhinegold”. Following the music group split up, he do short stints using the cover music group “FUNN”, so that as keyboard participant for Ronnie Hawkins. After submitting a demo tape to CBS Information (Sony Music Canada) in 1982, Gowan was signed to a contract.
