English character actress, about stage from 1894. Her many significant theatrical appearances consist of “Small Lord Fauntleroy” in the Prince’s Theater in Bristol, and, as Woman McClean, in “Get away Me Under no circumstances” in the Apollo in London (1933) – a component she subsequently got to Broadway 2 yrs later on. Until well into her seventies, Katie’s display career consisted nearly specifically of smallish parts, until she was solid as lovely, frail Mrs. Wilberforce in the traditional Ealing humor The Ladykillers (1955). A many quintessentially British part, it discovers her inside a crumbling boarding home with dodgy domestic plumbing, encircled by Victorian memorabilia, a bird called General Gordon, and a variety of genteel, but pixillated, older close friends. Her innocence and moral fortitude eventually precipitate the downfall of the gang of standard bank robbers, posing like a string quartet. This is the determining role of Katie’s career and it won her the 1955 BAFTA Award as Ideal Actress. She got another juicy part, as eavesdropping would-be sleuth Aunt Alice, in How exactly to Murder a Affluent Uncle (1957). Unfortunately, there was to become no more out of this wonderful picture stealer, as she passed on soon after, at age 78.
