Mini Biography

After a relatively brief acting stint in the silent Bitter Special (1916), Weingarten made a decision to focus on the other side from the camera, initially as publicity guy for Thomas H. Ince and, afterwards, First National Images. He was an early on impact in the profession of child superstar Jackie Coogan, before separately producing many biblical dramas in 1921. Subsequently, he proceeded to go mainstream comedy, making movies for Buster Keaton and Polly Moran. In 1927, he became a member of MGM under agreement as associate manufacturer, eventually increasing to creation supervisor beneath the auspices of Irving Thalberg. He was also for quite some time jointly (with Albert Lewin) responsible for the MGM editorial plank. During his almost forty year lengthy tenure, Weingarten created a number of the studio’s most prestigious motion pictures, like the wonderful Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn comedy Adam’s Rib (1949), the Lillian Roth biopic I’ll Weep Tomorrow (1955) as well as the exquisite Tennessee Williams adaptation of Pet cat on the Hot Tin Roofing (1958), starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. In 1962, Weingarten offered as president from the Screen Makers Guild. He retired in 1968.
