Michael Spencer began his profession being a cameraman in 1941 using the Country wide Film Plank of Canada, learning to be a manufacturer in 1945. He was appointed Professional Director from the Canadian Film Advancement Company (precursor of Telefilm Canada), occupying the post from 1968 to 1978. He oversaw the creation of such movies as Orderers (1974) (aimed by Michel Brault), as well as the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974) (aimed by Ted Kotcheff).
