Mini Biography

Italian composer who introduced Russian orchestral color and some from the violence of Richard Strauss’s harmonic techniques into Italian music. He examined on the Liceo of Bologna and afterwards with Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg, where he was initially violist in the Opera Orchestra. From his international masters Respighi obtained a order of orchestral color and a pastime in orchestral structure. A piano concerto by Respighi was performed at Bologna in 1902; a “notturno” for orchestra was performed at a concert in the Metropolitan Opera Home that calendar year. His comic opera Re Enzo as well as the opera Semirama brought him identification and a scheduled appointment in 1913 towards the St. Cecilia Academy in Rome as teacher of structure. He became movie director from the conservatory in 1924 but resigned in 1926. Respighi was attracted to the sensual, decadent environment from the Rome depicted with the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, and in his celebrated suites–Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome, 1923-24) and Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome, 1914-16) especially–he searched for to mention the subtlety and color from the poet’s imagination. Various other suites consist of Vetrate di chiesa (Cathedral Home windows, 1927); Gli ucelli (The Wild birds, 1927); Feste Romane (Roman Celebrations, 1929); and Trittico Botticelliano (Botticelli Triptych, 1927, for chamber orchestra)
