Mini Biography

Wilbur (Can) G. Beittel was created in 1913 in Philadelphia, USA. After participating in New York School and Oberlin University, he started a music profession in 1936 as composer and arranger for radio’s “Lucky Hit Strike Parade” and “CBS Golf swing Program”. He also orchestrated for several film studios until he discontinued music for horticulture around 1955 after participating in Pierce Agricultural University. Beittel transferred to Santa Barbara, California and became the town Arborist until 1963, when he became the Mature Nurseryman on the School of California, Santa Barbara. He continuing growing unusual spectacular types which he planted throughout the campus grounds, many which remain there today. Books he authored consist of: “Santa Barbara’s Road and Park Trees and shrubs”, “Santa Barbara’s Trees and shrubs”, and “Dr. F. Franceschi, Pioneer Plantsman”. He co-wrote “Trees and shrubs of Santa Barbara” with Katherine Muller and Richard Broder.
