William L. Snyder was among the initial Americans to carry out business in cold-war Eastern European countries, establishing Rembrandt Movies in 1949 for the intended purpose of film importation. The initial film imported, getting critical acclaim in america, was Czechoslovakia’s “Cisaruv slavik” (1951) (q.v.) [The Emperor’s Nightingale], path by Jiri Trnka, narration by Boris Karloff. He also brought in the French traditional “Le Ballon rouge” (1956) (q.v.) [The Crimson Balloon]. In 1959 he became a member of animator Gene Deitch (previous mind of UPA Research, NY) making cartoons in Prague. They received five Oscar nominations, earning for best cartoon short subject matter with “Munro” (1960) (q.v.), a Jules Feiffer story in regards to a 4-year-old drafted in to the military. Rembrandt also pioneered in animating well-know children’s books.
